Physicochemical Properties: Soluble in water (yellow), slightly soluble in ethanol and Cellosolve; insoluble in other organic solvents. In concentrated sulfuric acid, it appears yellow, yielding a yellow solution upon dilution. Nitric acid produces a yellow solution. Aqueous solutions remain unchanged with hydrochloric acid but deepen in red hue with sodium hydroxide.
Applications: Used for dyeing and direct printing on wool, silk, acetate, and nylon. Its barium salt is employed for coloring paper, leather, soap, pharmaceuticals, plastics, and aluminum surfaces. Also used in cosmetics and food coloring.
