Physicochemical Properties: Soluble in water, yielding a magenta solution, and sparingly soluble in ethanol, forming a light purple solution. In concentrated sulfuric acid, it appears purple-black, turning orange to reddish-brown upon dilution. The aqueous dye solution produces a maroon to burgundy precipitate with concentrated hydrochloric acid and a wine-red precipitate with concentrated sodium hydroxide solution.
Applications: Dyes cellulose fabrics to a bluish-red or reddish-purple shade. Suitable for one-bath dyeing of polyester/cotton and polyester/viscose blends. Also used for dyeing leather and paper.
