Physicochemical Properties: Soluble in water, yielding a reddish-purple solution, and in cellosolve. Slightly soluble in ethanol and insoluble in other organic solvents. In concentrated sulfuric acid, it appears bluish-green, turning to a violet precipitate upon dilution. In concentrated nitric acid, it forms a reddish-purple solution. The aqueous dye solution produces a violet precipitate with concentrated hydrochloric acid and a purple precipitate with concentrated sodium hydroxide. The color turns darker with copper ions and slightly changes with iron ions.
Applications: Used for dyeing cellulose fibers and leather, as well as for paper coloring.
