Physicochemical Properties: Blackish-brown powder. Soluble in water (blue-black) and ethanol (blue). Turns bluish-green in concentrated sulfuric acid (dark greenish-blue precipitate upon dilution); dark green in concentrated nitric acid (burgundy upon dilution); bright blue in 10% sodium hydroxide. The aqueous solution forms greenish-blue precipitates with hydrochloric acid and blue precipitates with sodium hydroxide.
Applications: For dyeing/printing wool, silk, nylon, and blends, and coloring paper, stamping foil, soap, wood, biological specimens, leather, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics. Also for ink production.
