Aqueous solutions turn red with hydrochloric acid and reddish-orange-brown with sodium hydroxide. Good leveling.

Applications: For wool dyeing in strong acid baths and printing on wool, nylon, and silk. Its barium salt serves as an organic pigment; also for color lakes, ink, leather, paper, soap, wood, electroplated aluminum, pharmaceuticals, biological staining, and cosmetics.
