Physicochemical Properties: Dark red powder. Soluble in water (bluish-red to red), slightly soluble in ethanol, acetone, and cellosolve; insoluble in other organic solvents. In concentrated sulfuric acid, it appears bluish-red, turning bright red upon dilution; in concentrated nitric acid, it forms a scarlet solution that turns orange. The aqueous solution turns magenta with concentrated hydrochloric acid and orange-brown with sodium hydroxide solution.
Applications: Used for dyeing wool, silk, nylon, leather, paper, soap, wood, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics. Also used for biological staining.
