Physicochemical Properties: Yellow powder. Highly soluble in water, ethanol, ether, benzene, and ethylene glycol monoethyl ether; slightly soluble in acetone. In sulfuric acid, it turns purple, yielding a red precipitate upon dilution. Nitric acid produces a blue-to-orange transition. Aqueous solutions form red precipitates with hydrochloric acid and yellow precipitates with excess sodium hydroxide. Good dischargeability.

Applications: Primarily for soap coloring and wool dyeing in strong acid baths. Also for leather dyeing, paper coloring, and producing color lakes, coatings, wood stains, biological stains, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics.
