Physicochemical Properties: Reddish glittering or bronze powder. Soluble in water, sparingly in ethanol (blue). In concentrated sulfuric acid, appears yellowish-green, turning blue upon dilution; grayish-green in nitric acid. Aqueous solutions yield purple or dark purple precipitates with sodium hydroxide; unaffected by hydrochloric acid.
Applications: For silk and wool (lightfastness: 1). For tannin-mordanted cotton (lightfastness: 3). Formerly used for direct printing on cotton. Also for paper, bamboo, wood, ink manufacturing, color lakes, biological staining, and solvent dyes.
