Physicochemical Properties: Dark green glittering powder or granules. Soluble in cold and hot water (purple), readily soluble in ethanol (purple). In concentrated sulfuric acid, appears reddish-yellow, turning greenish-yellow then blue/purple upon dilution. On cotton, 10% sulfuric acid turns it greenish-yellow; acidic stannous chloride turns it dark yellow with a bluish-green ring. Dyes tannin-mordanted cotton a bright bluish-purple, redder under tungsten light.
Applications: For dyeing silk and wool (lightfastness: 1; washfastness: 2–3). Poor fastness on tannin-mordanted cotton. Also for leather, paper, grass, hemp, and manufacturing color lakes for paints, inks, and stationery. Medical use as gentian violet.
