Physicochemical Properties: Dark blue powder. Soluble in water, yielding a blue to navy solution, and slightly soluble in ethanol and cellosolve. Insoluble in other organic solvents. In concentrated sulfuric acid, it appears bright blue, turning to purple or reddish-blue upon dilution. The aqueous dye solution turns navy blue with concentrated hydrochloric acid and dark purple with concentrated sodium hydroxide, both with precipitation.
Applications: Mainly used for dyeing cotton, viscose, and other cellulose fabrics, as well as silk and viscose/cotton blends. Also used for coloring leather, paper, and biological specimens.
